PIP Decision

PIP Decision

Once you have completed your assessment, the next step in your claim will be for the DWP to make a decision whether you qualify for an award of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

You will receive a decision letter from the case handler assigned to your claim. The letter will explain whether or not you have qualified for PIP. Within the letter you will be given an explanation as to how many points you have scored for each activity.

PIP is a points-based award. In order to qualify for a standard award of PIP one needs to score a minimum total of 8 points, either for daily living and/or mobility. If you score a total of 8 points for daily living and 8 points for mobility you will be awarded PIP at the standard rate for both components.

In order to qualify for an enhanced award of PIP you need to score a minimum total of 12 points, either for daily living and/or mobility. If you score a minimum total of 12 points for daily living and a minimum of 12 points for mobility you will be awarded PIP at the enhanced rate for both components.

Your decision letter will explain how the DWP reached their decision.

If you are awarded PIP you will receive back-dated arrears starting at the point of your initial claim.

When does PIP start?

If you are awarded PIP, it will be paid directly into your bank, building or post office account every four weeks – If you’re living with a terminal illness, it will be paid weekly.

If you are not awarded PIP, you have the right to ask the DWP to reconsider your claim; this is called a Mandatory Reconsideration. Someone else within the DWP will look at your case again to decide whether the original decision needs to be changed or not.

When applying for a Mandatory Reconsideration, it’s possible for a previous award to be lowered or removed completely.

We are able to offer practical help and advice on submitting a mandatory reconsideration, please call us on 0330 124 8555 for further information.
